Relationship between Serum Creatinine, Cystatin-C and Creatinine Clearance in Chronic Kidney Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
Recommendations for laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of chronic kidney disease (CKD) state the use of both serum creatinine and cystatin-C in various clinical situations. The relationship of these markers to estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is found to be different in different populations. In India the routine reporting of eGFR is yet to commence. Meanwhile, the utility of these two serum markers as indicators of GFR is being evaluated in this cross-sectional study on CKD patients. The correlation between serum creatinine and cystatin-C was moderate, and cystatin-C correlated better with creatinine clearance than serum creatinine. The difference in handling of creatinine in the proximal tubule could be the reason.

SERUM CYSTATIN C AS A NEW MARKER OF GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE (GFR)
Cystatin C is a 13 KD basic protein that is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors. The cystatin C gene seems to be a house keeping gene, which is compatible with a stable production rate of cystatin C by most cells. This protein is freely filtered through the glomerulus and almost completely reabsorbed and catabolized by proximal tubular cells. Because of the...

Background & Aims : In the past serum creatinine concentration was used as one of the important markers for early detection of kidney disorders, however recent studies suggest serum cystatin C to be a better marker. Therefore in this study we compared the diagnostic value of cystatin C with serum creatinine to evaluate kidney function in patients with high blood pressure. Materials & Meth...
متن کاملComparison of Serum Cystatin C and Creati-nine Levels to Evaluate Early Renal Function after Kidney Transplantation
Background: Accurate and rapid assessment of allograft function is essential in renal transplant recipients in order to detect allograft rejection and to monitor drug nephrotoxicity. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of cystatin C as a marker of kidney allograft function in the early post-transplant period and to compare this value with that of conventional serum creatinine concentration. Met...
متن کاملComparative Assessment of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) and Cystatin C as Early Biomarkers for Early Detection of Renal Failure in Patients with Hypertension
Background: Hypertension is one the most common causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD). One of the major concerns in hypertensive patients is early detection of renal disorders. In the past, serum creatinine (Scr) concentration was used as a marker of kidney function, but it proffers a late reflection of reduced glomerular filtration rate. Cystatin C and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocal...
متن کاملSimple Cystatin C Formula for Estimation of Glomerular Filtration Rate in Overweight Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and Chronic Kidney Disease
In clinical practice the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is estimated from serum creatinine-based equations like the Cockcroft-Gault formula (C&G) and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula (MDRD). Recently, serum cystatin C-based equations, the newer creatinine formula (The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration formula (CKD-EPI)), and equation that use both serum creatinine...
